Why Use Technology?
Technology and Learning
Today technology touches almost every part of our lives. Yet many educational institutions or programs lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into classroom learning. What is the true potential for learning through technology? When used well, technology helps learners acquire the skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based economy.
Integrating technology into a classroom or program means more than teaching basic computer skills and software programs in a separate computer class. Effective integration must happen across the curriculum in ways that deepen and enhance the learning process. In particular, it must support four key components of learning:
- Active engagement of learners
- Participation in groups
- Frequent interaction and feedback
- Connection to real-world experts
The wealth of online resources provides each classroom with more interesting, diverse, and current learning materials. The Web connects learners to experts in the real world and provides numerous opportunities for them to express themselves through blogging, social networking and storytelling.
