Influencing Public Policy

By monitoring policy initiatives and consulting with governments, the NWT Literacy Council worked to keep literacy on the public policy agenda. Some of our activities over the past year included:

Territorial activities:

Participation on the Ministerial Literacy Council, which advises the Minister responsible on the implementation of the NWT Literacy Strategy.
Presentation to the Special Committee on the Review of the Official Languages Act
Meetings and correspondence with Ministers, MLAs and senior officials regarding literacy issues in the NWT.

Federal activities:

Participated in national Best Practices in Literacy consultations as part of the Skills and Learning Agenda;
Participated in the Innovations Summit where recommendations regarding skills development, learning and innovation strategies were presented to the Ministers of Human Resources Development and Industry;
Presentation to the federal Standing Committee on Human
Resource Development as part of their study of adult literacy in Canada.
Participated in Literacy Action Day on Parliament Hill October 2002.
Worked closely with other provincial, territorial and national literacy coalitions to develop a national literacy action agenda.
