Highlights of 2002 - 2003
Over the past year, the Literacy Council offered the following
programs and services to communities across the NWT:
Family Literacy Development
The NWT Literacy Council has supported the development of
family literacy throughout the NWT. Our approach to family
literacy has been to integrate family literacy programming into
existing family support, early childhood, school or adult literacy
programming and build on local expertise in the community.
Over the past 2 years we have:
- Delivered six regional Family Literacy Training Institutes
and trained 150 family literacy facilitators
- Supported over 40 community-based family literacy programs;
- Developed and distributed 1700 Family Learning Kits to
families of 4-year olds;
- Provided additional family literacy training workshops to
communities across the NWT;
- Supported local family literacy projects through information sharing, development and distribution of
quarterly family literacy newsletter, community visits and mentoring;
- Researched new approaches and tools to extend family literacy services in the NWT.
