T.A.I.L.S. Program (Therapy Animals Involved in Literacy Success) (Yellowknife)
St John Ambulance in partnership with the NWT SPCA and the Yellowknife Public Library has started a new program where kids read to therapy dogs at the library. This program is new but has been well received by the kids and dogs!
Canadian Children’s Book Week Presents
Dianna Bonder, author and illustrator, will do a presentation at the Library on Friday November 23rd at 2:00 pm. For more information call 920‐5642
Yellowknife’s Newest Author Launches Book, Saturday,
November 24 at the Yellowknife Book Cellar from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
Building upon his popular series, Tyler Heal’s Street Stories which appear in the Yellowknifer, Tyler Heal has written The Times Behind the Signs. The 72 page book features detailed descriptions of the stories behind Yellowknife’s street names and includes archival photos and maps. Each story is a fascinating portrayal of those who
shaped Yellowknife. The people after whom our city’s streets were named include Yellowknife’s First Peoples, southern transplants, aviation pioneers and a Distinguished Flying Cross recipient. Tyler, who is only sixteen years old, is donating all of the proceeds of this book to the NWT Mining Heritage Society.
Introductory Linguistics for Language Revitalization
(LING 181, 1.5 units) January – April 2008
This course provides an introduction to topics in the study of language
and linguistics, as a foundation for understanding language revitalization. Topics
include: sound systems and how they relate to orthographies, word structures and dictionaries, sentence structures and understanding texts, meaning and vocabulary,
language acquisition and historical change. Develop your awareness of languages
targeted for revitalization, linguistic topics and resources.
Please register by: December 10, 2007 (late registrations accepted if space permits) This course is open to students in all faculties. Students outside of UVic wishing to take the course should contact Anissa Paulsen, Program Coordinator. This course is part of the Certificate Program in Aboriginal Language Revitalization. The Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centres (SARC) developed the SARC Literacy Activity Handbook to be a useful resource for people working with adults with intellectual / developmental disabilities. This may be volunteer tutors working
one‐on‐one with learners through mainstream literacy programs, or disability practitioners delivering programs in group homes, rehabilitation centres, sheltered workshops, day programs and so on.
