Family Literacy Programs in NWT Communities


Nahanni Butte has organized a comprehensive literacy program for their community. They will be:

check mark image Having family literacy nights
check mark image Providing free books for families
check mark image Having Elders tell stories to preserve the culture
check mark image Having parents/volunteers meet with students on a weekly basis for reading

The Fort Resolution Literacy Program will host an evening preschool reading circle for children one to four years old and their parents. The reading circle has two objectives. First, they want to expose young children to books and to mentally stimulating activities. Second, they want to work with the parents of young children in the community to give them ideas for activities they can do at home with their children.

Growing Together in Hay River will run a Books in the Home Program for families. Parents and child study books each week. This is a great way to get books into people’s home.

Wekweti will hold two Book Birthday Parties for the families in the community. All children will be get a free book. They will also hold six Books in the Home sessions, eight 1-2-3 Rhyme With Me sessions and seven Family Activity Nights.
