January 27, 2006 was a great day to have a party. Across Canada communities gathered in celebration of Family Literacy Day. Every year since 1999, January 27 has been a day to recognize and celebrate the importance of reading and learning together as a family and to remember that parents are a child's first and most important teacher.

It's important to remember too that family literacy isn't just about reading and writing. Family literacy includes baking and cooking together, playing games, grocery shopping, and simply talking and sharing time together. These activities help children develop literacy and learning skills, and enable parents and families to support children's learning.

People across the north know that family literacy is important. Read on and see how communities throughout the NWT celebrated Family Literacy Day.
