More Training: Monthly Literacy Workshops
In January 2006, the NWT Literacy Council began hosting monthly literacy
workshops in Yellowknife. The first workshop offered was Proposal Writing.
Ten people participated in the two day workshop, which included participants
from Fort Resolution and Hay River. The first part of the workshop focused
on a planning process to become clear about the goals and objectives
of each person's project. With clear goals and objectives in place,
the second half of the workshop focused on the writing process, what
to include and how to structure a proposal. Participants appreciated
the resources and left feeling more confident about their proposal writing

February Talking Books

Friday, February 24 Where: Aurora College Computer Lab Time:
9:00 am – 4:00 pm Cost: $100 Talking books are a great way to engage literacy
learners and families in reading. This workshop will show you an easy step-by-step
way to make talking books on the computer using PowerPoint. This workshop
is good for both those who have lots of experience in PowerPoint as well
as those not familiar with the program. Every participant will make
a talking book or two! March Bookmaking

Northern United Place Time: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Cost: $100 Learn
how to make and use fun home-made books. During the workshop you will
make cloth books, bound books, paper books, foam books and more. You
will also
get some ideas on how to use books with your students, families and children.
Participants will learn about an exciting family literacy program called
Books in the
Home, and will receive a Books in the Home manual.
April Families
First: Northern Parenting & Learning Program
Dates: Thursday/Friday,
April 27/28 Where: Northern United Place Time: 9:00 am – 4:00
pm Cost: $150 Families First is a northern parenting and learning
program that supports parents with young children. It was modeled after the
program Nobody's Perfect Parenting program. Participants will learn
how they can use this program to set up a parenting group. Participants
will also learn how to work with groups and will have a chance to
practice their new facilitation skills. Each participant will receive
a Families First
manual. |
