Family Literacy in Fort LiardAsk anyone in Fort Liard and they will tell you that Family Literacy Nights are a great way to spend an evening. The NWT Literacy Council had the opportunity to do a family literacy night in Fort Liard in March. The evening was organized by Melanie Genest, the new Adult Educator at the Learning Centre. We kicked off the evening with a game of picture bingo, and for the lucky winners there was a table full of book prizes to choose from. We read Love You Forever, a great book written by the well known author Robert Munsch. We made Family Trees out of coloured paper. Moms and dads helped as the kids neatly and patiently wrote out the names of each person in their family, one name per leaf. We also had a Polaroid camera and took a photograph of each child. The kids' artistic talents were evident when they began to make frames for their pictures. A magnet was glued onto the back of their picture, which makes for easy displaying on the fridge. Family Literacy Nights are the perfect way to spend time together with your family and neighbours, while having fun with reading, writing, and crafts. Plan a Family Literacy Night for your community today. Contact us for copies of our How to Kits for Love you Forever and other books too. |
