Nutrition and Learning

Our muscles use energy to move. Our hearts use energy to pump blood through out our bodies, and our brains use energy to think. Nutritious food gives our bodies energy to do these things. It gives us the nutrition that we need to grow and to develop in a strong and healthy way. Eating nutritious food is important. Trish Fitzpatrick, Nutritionist with the Department of Health and Social Services presented on the topic of Nutrition and Menu Planning.

Start the day with breakfast

Children's brains (and adults' too) need the energy they get from food in order to work properly. Starting the day with a nutritious breakfast is very important. People have observed groups of children who did not eat breakfast. graphic image of milk being poured on a bowl of cerealThey compared these children to other groups of children who did eat breakfast. They found that the children who did not eat breakfast had more difficulties with math, with reading and with problem solving. They also had more disruptive behaviours.

Good breakfast choices

Good breakfast choices could include:

  • scrambled eggs, whole wheat toast, canned peaches, and a glass of milk;
  • a bowl of oatmeal with raisins and milk, and a piece of fruit;
  • pancakes with frozen berries and syrup and a glass of milk;
  • or a grilled cheese sandwich and a piece of fruit.

Remember, breakfast is important. Plan ahead so that your child starts their day ready to learn.
