Literacy Council Update

The NWT Literacy Council has been working to support the development of community-based literacy programming for the past 6 years. We are excited about the work that communities across the NWT have done to promote and support local literacy programs and activities.

In our view, literacy is much more than the act of reading and writing. Our work has been driven by the two main principles:

1) That literacy is closely connected to health, justice, employment, culture, community decision making and family supports.

2) That communities must be supported to identify their own literacy needs and define their own solutions.

This year, with funding through the GNWT’s Literacy Strategy and the National Literacy Secretariat, we are continuing to offer training and support to communities and practitioners across the NWT. Some of our services this year include:

This year, we will be working with literacy practitioners to explore best practices in community-based adult literacy programs. We will also be talking to our literacy partners across the NWT as we develop a new strategic plan for our organization.
