The NWT Literacy Council has been working to support the
development of community-based literacy programming for the past 6 years. We
are excited about the work that communities across the NWT have done to promote
and support local literacy programs and activities.
In our view,
literacy is much more than the act of reading and writing. Our work has been
driven by the two main principles: |

That literacy is
closely connected to health, justice, employment, culture, community decision
making and family supports. |

| 2) |
That communities must be
supported to identify their own literacy needs and define their own
solutions. |
| This year, with funding through the GNWTs Literacy
Strategy and the National Literacy Secretariat, we are continuing to offer
training and support to communities and practitioners across the NWT. Some of

| This year, we will be working with literacy practitioners
to explore best practices in community-based adult literacy programs. We will
also be talking to our literacy partners across the NWT as we develop a new
strategic plan for our organization. |
