Make Literacy an Issue in the Territorial Election

November 24 is Election Day in the NWT. We have an opportunity during a territorial election campaign to focus public attention on important issues. Speak directly to candidates to find out what they think, and to educate them about what matters to us.

Before Election Day, ask the candidates in your riding about literacy. For example:

1) What will they do to make sure literacy is a priority for the new government?

2) How can they help make sure communitybased literacy programs get the government funding they need?

Literacy matters in the NWT – to families, the workplace, communities, and individuals. Strong literacy skills are critical to our well-being. Strong literacy skills help our economy, improve our social conditions and our health, and increase active citizen participation.

Over the past several years community organizations, workplaces, and individual people have delivered local programs to deal with the challenges of low literacy. We are seeing results. More people recognize literacy is important. More people are looking for ways to improve their literacy skills. We need to celebrate and support this success.

Now more than ever, we need to make sure all NWT residents have opportunities and resources to develop their potential and contribute to northern society. When we invest in literacy we invest in people. Find out what your candidates think and what they plan to do if they’re elected.
