Peter Gzowski was a true champion of literacy and a great
friend to Northerners. He founded the Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI ) Golf
Tournaments for Literacy in 1986 as a way to raise funds for literacy and
celebrate the importance of reading and writing. In 1990, he brought the PGI
north to Yellowknife for the first time. He made a personal commitment to the
Northern PGIs and participated in virtually every one. Those PGIs included Pond
Inlet, Inuvik, Cambridge Bay, Ft. Providence, Rankin Inlet, Ft. Smith, Iqaluit,
Hay River, Kugluktuk and Yellowknife. With each trip north, he developed a
stronger appreciation for this remote part of Canada and a deeper respect for
the people who live here.
All of us who work and volunteer in literacy will always
be grateful for his dedication and commitment to the literacy cause. He made a
real difference and will be missed. |
