NWT Literacy Council February 2005

New President's Message

I am very pleased to be the new president of the NWT Literacy Council. I would like to thank Katherine Peterson, the past president, for her dedication to the NWT Literacy Council in the past four years. Katherine provided the Literacy Council with guidance and support in our work to increase the visibility of literacy in the NWT.

I have been on the NWT Literacy Council's board for several years and feel that I have a good understanding of the literacy issues in the NWT. I have come to understand that literacy is much more than simply reading and writing. It is directly linked to our health and well being, justice, employment, families, culture and Aboriginal language. Literacy is fundamental to how we actively participate in community life.

As we head into the new fiscal year, we need to make clear our priorities to the government of the Northwest Territories. I would like to encourage those who are running community-based literacy programs to write to their MLAs telling them about your successes. It is important for your MLAs to hear about how your program has made an impact in your community.
