Share your stories - share your culture

Promote Literacy in Your Community!
You can do lots of things
in your community to promote literacy. Here are some ideas:
- Put up posters around town with community members doing literacy related
activities. Remember literacy isn't just about reading, it can
be reading the weather, sewing mitts, or telling stories. Put slogans
on the posters that promote community culture, language and literacy
like:
- Literacy involves everyone.
- Literacy is a family
affair.
- Speak your language at home.
- Read today and
everyday.
- Organize
a Literacy Fair for your community. Invite the school, adult learning
centre, the health centre and preschool to set up a booth that has
literacy activities. This is a great way to promote literacy and get
the whole community
involved.
- Present an organization, individual or business
with a Literacy Leader Award.
- Organize volunteers to go
to the school to read to young children, or ask older students
to read to younger students.
- Use the radio to promote
literacy in your community. Make up some literacy ads for your
community and ask Elders to say them on the radio.
