Literacy as a Community Building Tool

Literacy is much more than reading and writing. It is about having a voice, discovering possibilities and actively participating in the social, economic and political life of our communities. Literacy is a process in which people gain greater control over their lives.

Likewise, community development is a process that supports community members to work together to address local issues and take action. It is about building capacity to identify and work together for solutions that support the health and well-being of the whole community.

Literacy is linked to many social issues and can be used as a catalyst for change.

Many communities in the North are using literacy programs and activities to bring people together to build community skills and collaboration. In this newsletter you will here about three NWT communities (Tsiigehtchic, Inuvik and Holman) that are using literacy activities to make positive changes in their community.
