| Programs that Support Literacy are
Blooming |
|
Over the past year, the interest and commitment to
literacy programming and support has blossomed in the NWT. Community groups,
employers, schools and parents are recognizing the importance of literacy and
are working to build programs and services to support the literacy needs of
their communities. Here are some examples: |
 |
Over 40 family
literacy coordinators have been trained in the Deh Cho, South Slave and
Yellowknife regions and have developed a range of local programs to support
parents and their children. |

In Ft. Resolution, Aurora College
staff and members of the community worked together to provide a range of
literacy programs including family literacy, literacy tutoring and Aboriginal
language literacy activities. |

In Ft. Providence, a local
committee made up of people from the school, Aboriginal Head Start, the
Community Learning Center and the Band offered a number of family literacy
activities for the whole community. |

 |
In Holman, family literacy
programs and literacy programs for seniors and youth support traditional
knowledge and Aboriginal language development. |
