Family Literacy Day 2007 in the NWT![]() Family Literacy Day in Aklavik National Family Literacy Day was celebrated across Canada and the NWT on Saturday, January 27, 2007. Here are some of the activities that took place in communities across the Northwest Territories. Aklavik: The Aklavik Community Library opened its doors for some family fun. Eight adults and 14 children came out to read stories, make books, have some gym time, and enjoy some snacks. There were door prizes for the adults and surprise bags for the kids. Every child went home with a bag of books, crayons, colouring books, and pencils. Fort McPherson: The Fort McPherson Community Library celebrated with an open house. The event was a real success. Thirteen parents and twenty-five children came out for an evening of family fun and free books. Lutsel K'e: Lutsel K'e Dene School was the place to be for Family Literacy Day fun. Parents and preschoolers joined in the scattergories, word games, stories, sewing, crafts and more. The afternoon ended with hot dogs for everyone. Inuvik: The Inuvik Centennial Library and Education, Culture and Employment organized activities to interest everyone. More than 50 people came to the library and visited the different activity centres: Games and Puzzles; Puppet Play; Scrapbooking; Story Time; and Crafts. Some lucky people went home with prize bags filled with books, colouring books, playdough, and pencils. Paulatuk: Angik School in Paulatuk celebrated Family Literacy Day with some buddy-up reading. High school students buddied-up with younger students to read and share stories. At 2:30, students' families were invited to join the fun and for the rest of of the afternoon everyone played games like sight word bingo, scattergories and word puzzles. Yellowknife: The NWT Literacy Council and the Yellowknife Public library teamed up for a Saturday afternoon of fun. We read, we made frog-shaped tambourines, and then hopped and sang and danced! Other invited guests included local author Kathleen Roberts. |
