What’s New in Literacy

Over the past year, the literacy community across Canada has regrouped and refocused its energy to continue to raise awareness about the importance of addressing our literacy challenges. Here is an overview of some important events, reports and projects that will be taking place over the next few months.

Reaching for the Tipping Point in Literacy – February 4 – 5, 2008 – Ottawa. Sponsored by Work and Learning Knowledge Centre and the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre of the Canadian Council on Learning.

The forum will bring together literacy practitioners, business, labour, policy makers and researchers to discuss and build consensus on an action plan that includes workplace, family, and community literacy.

Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) Pan-Canadian Interactive Literacy Forum, April 14 – 15, 2008 This online, interactive conference will link participants from 10 sites across Canada. Forum themes include Literacy and Prosperity; Building a Skilled and Resilient Workforce; Aboriginal Literacy; Connecting Communities for Lifelong Learning. TD Bank Financial Group views literacy as a national priority. The TD Bank Financial Group has just released a report saying that Canada must redouble efforts to address its literacy challenges. The report emphasizes the need for a “coordinated and complementary” approach, with federal and provincial/ territorial governments and the private sector providing support.
