Who are we?
We are a territorial not-for-profit organization that promotes and supports literacy in all the official languages of the NWT. We are also a registered charity.
What do we do?
- We work with communities to help develop local literacy projects.
- We provide resources to literacy practitioners and other community workers.
- We develop teaching, learning and promotional materials for use by literacy practitioners, teachers, and other community workers.
- We monitor and respond to territorial and federal literacy policies.
- We research literacy issues affecting the NWT.
- We encourage reading and writing at all ages.
How do we do that?
Training
- We develop and deliver literacy workshops to practitioners and community workers.
- We develop and deliver facilitator training for family literacy programs.
- We develop and deliver plain language workshops.
- We organize professional development training for literacy practitioners.
Public Awareness
- We support communities to organize events during NWT Literacy Week and Family Literacy Day and host the PGI (Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament for Literacy)
- We provide information on literacy issues, programs, and events across the NWT.
- We make presentations on literacy to government, business, labour and the public.
- We hold conferences on literacy issues.
Resources
- We have a resource library of program support materials and literacy research.
- We write and publish four issues of Literacy Matters, our newsletter.
- We develop a wide-range of family literacy resources for communities to use.
- We have a web site with resources and information about literacy in the NWT.
